Glass Processing

Metalfilms’ glass division, recently founded, deals with the processing of flat glasses.
Processing is developed after the submission of the customer’s requests. We are specialized in the production of tempered glass of small dimensions. Production takes place on demand. The raw material is large glass sheets, processed according to the customer’s drawings.
Generally, Metalfilms’ glass products are employed in the lighting industry, in diving masks, electric devices, light switch covers.
Metalfilms’s peculiarity is the production of small tempered glasses. On demand we produce also printed glasses.
The production starts with the supply of large glass sheets of different thicknesses and typologies, for example: clear – stopsol (half-reflecting) low-emissivity, patterned, etc.
An specific cutting table, computer controlled (CNC), cuts the glasses in the requested dimensions.
Subsequently the glass edges are finished. Two different edge finishing are available: polished edges realized by bilateral machines equipped with diamond tools; and grinded edges realized with abrasive ribbon.
Both methods are abrasive operations so it is very important to cool the glass sheet before proceeding, in order to avoid “damages” on the edges that could form small superficial fractures. These fractures are not visible, but they could provoke the glass breaking, even after some time.

The next two phases consist in Washing and drying the glasses. They are necessary to avoid any residual calcareous stains, not acceptable for our quality standards.

After the edge finishing  we can make holes or prints using the silk-screen method with special machines which grant precision, velocity and repetitiveness.

At last sheets are tempered in a special plant called oscillating oven. The plant is composed by a loading area, a heating area, a cooling area and unloading area.

Sheets of glass are put on the rollers of the loading area. At the start of the operator glasses move inside the heating area  which is built with special silica rollers that do not ruin the glasses during the heating process. The loaded glasses oscillate backward and forward  until every glass reaches  630°C.  Then glasses are quickly moved forward the cooling area. This area is equipped with special blowers that can cool glasses  with a quantity of air inversely proportional to the thickness of the glass.

It is extremely important to cool the  glasses down, in a uniform way and also to make symmetrical pressure on both sides of the glass.

After the tempering process glasses cannot be submitted to further operations such as drilling or cutting.

There follows a list of each phase of tempered glass processing:

  • Cutting
  • Grinding of edges.
  • Washing
  • Drying
  • Mechanical processing
  • Silk-screen printing
  • Tempering

A tempered glass largely improves its mechanical properties becoming more resistant to impact: strength, flexion, high temperature and thermal shock.
The tempered glass has safety properties because it is more resistant and in case of accidental breaking, it shatters into smaller and less angular fragments which are not dangerous.

Metalfilms’s peculiarity is the production of small tempered glasses, according to the customer’s requests.  We can produce glasses in any kind of shapes, with polished or grinded edges, drilled and engraved.

Besides we can supply decorated glasses, with many colours, realized by silk-screen printing.

We can apply conductive prints in order to heat the glass surface, even on glasses coated with metallic couche.

  • Safety tempered glasses
  • Every kind of shape: round, rectangular, etc
  • Edge finishing according to the customer’s requests.
  • Every kind of mechanical processing
  • Silk-screen printing
  • Heated glasses
  • Patterned glasses
  • Anti-reflection glasses
  • Low-emissivity glasses

The continuous improvement of quality is one of our top priorities and it is a guarantee of performance of our products.

The ISO 9002 certified company performs quality control if asked by the customer. In absence of specific requests, a standard procedure is carried out, according to the European law EN 1249, which defines the properties of a tempered glass sheet. These properties are:

  • Visual inspection during the whole production cycle
  • Dimensional controls using specific tools
  • Printing inspection in case of printed glasses
  • Tempering degree inspection which consists in destructive tests: a glass sample is broken in order to verify  how many  glass fragments are shattered on a determined area.

Last but not least, we grant punctual deliveries, a feature that has always distinguished us from other Companies. This has been made possible also because we can count on a truck of our property, that we use to guarantee that deliveries are always in time.

Why choose us

  • Visual inspection during the whole production cycle
  • Dimensional controls using specific tools
  • Printing inspection in case of printed glasses
  • Tempering degree inspection which consists in destructive tests: a glass sample is broken in order to verify how many glass fragments are shattered on a determined area.
  • Punctuality
